Groove Gravy founder Roy Shakked’s music career started
out in Boston where he worked as a bar pianist while studying at Berklee
College of Music. He then moved to NYC, working as a composer.
A project he managed for a client, Delta
Entertainment in Los Angeles, ended with Shakked moving to
L.A. and becoming Producer and Director of Repertoire
for Delta's assorted labels including the Yamaha
Artist Series.
By 1997, Shakked was tired of focusing strictly on the business
end of things and started scoring music for industrial
videos, producing and arranging music for local artists and lending
his piano and voice skills to several projects. By 2000, music production became
his full-time gig, leading to the inception of Groove Gravy
Records in March of 2002. His first album release, Fresh
Goods by The Tao of Groove, hit the street the end
of May. Passing up on multiple label offers to release it he put it out himself." It's
paid off. Fresh Goods received phenomenal reviews, meaningful
airplay, and tracks off of the album are continually being licensed
for Television, Film and album compilations.
Roy has gone on to produce dozens of other tracks with
an eclectic scope, ranging from nu-jazz remixes of Sarah Vaughan
and McCoy Tyner to his own acclaimed Beatles-esque solo project Holmes.
With a combination of licenses from fellow artists and producers Groove
Gravy has gone on to release music that's smart and infectious,
with a focus on promotion to radio, Television and film production
and a strong relationship with music supervisors.
"This is not a direct aim at any particular musical niche,
and certainly not the pop market" says Shakked "but rather
a collection of my own creations and other music I personally connect
with. The styles and moods vary. Groove Gravy’s attempt is
to move you around musically."
